The chances of the Fairview girls swim team enjoying the talents of Abbie Houck at the state finals next week are growing dim.

Houck, who has not competed with the Knights for several weeks due to a torn left rotator cuff, tested the injury this week with mixed results. While coach Bob Smartt reports that Houck definitely is showing improvement, she has been unable to fully approximate a freestyle stroke. Houck is not entered in this week's Front Range League meet, and Fairview has until Sunday to enter the 2011 500 freestyle champion into this year's Class 5A state meet, which begins Feb. 8 in Fort Collins.

Houck will test the shoulder in the water again later this week in hopes of making a last-ditch effort to make the Knights' state roster. At the very least, Houck will be far from 100 percent if she competes at state, although at this point her availability appears to be doubtful at best.

"She's getting a little better each day, but she's way, way off of where she has to be at this time of year," Smartt said. "She's still very uncertain as to whether she can swim state."

Houck, a senior who will continue her career at Louisville, is in danger of missing the state meet for the second consecutive year after opting out of last year's finals in order to concentrate on her training for last summer's U.S. Olympic Trials.
