LONGMONT -- Looking for a little weekend workout, the Mead wrestling team invited three teams to its gym on Saturday.

Wrestling a dual style tournament against Vista Ridge, Denver North and Estes Park, the Mavericks finished 2-1. The hosts beat Denver North 53-18 and Estes Park 66-12. They lost to Vista Ridge 47-32.

Mead's Austin Van Hooker experienced quite a variety in his matches. The Mavericks junior 132-pounder went 3-0, including a second-round pin against Vista Ridge, a 1-0 decision against Denver North and a forfeit against Estes Park.

Van Hooker said he was still stiff from getting roughed up by Thomas Jefferson's Layth Dieyleh, who is ranked sixth in 4A. After taking a bit of a beating, Van Hooker was glad to come back and wrestle two good matches the next day.

"I was exhausted coming into it," Van Hooker said. "I though I wrestled pretty well. My neck was really stiff after yesterday, but I was just looking to work harder and make sure I won."

Along with Van Hooker, Kyle Couch (195), Sage Budd (120) and Hugo Martinez (1520 each went 3-0.

Ranked second in 4A, Couch didn't have to wake up early and travel across the state to get tested by a stout 195-pound opponent. He rose to that challenge, highlighting his day with a 9-3 decision over Vista Ridge's Jacob Hawthorne, who is ranked seventh in 4A.

As a team, Couch said the Mavericks showed they're in a good spot at this early point in the season.

"We struggled in some parts but we still looked pretty good overall," Couch said. "The teams were all pretty good."

Dylan Burch went 2-1, including a forfeit and a 17-2 technical fall. He was pinned at the end of the first round by Vista Ridge's LaDarius Stubbs, ranked 13th in 4A.

"I knew he was going to be really good," Burch said. "He was aggressive and I just got caught in a cradle."

At the end of the day, Mavericks head coach Ty Tatham said the Mavericks got the test they were looking for.

"We lost to Vista Ridge but that's alright," Tatham said. "You just want to get tough matches this time of year. That's what we got and we'll get better for it."
