Font ResizeLONGMONT -- Nothing was falling for Faith Baptist's Hailey Schulman against rival Longmont Christian on Friday night. But when the Pioneers needed a big shot, Schulman knocked it down.
Trailing the Warriors by two with time running out, Schulman hit a 3-pointer with 14 seconds left. The senior guard's only basket of the game gave the Pioneers a 26-25 win.
"It took a lot to get it going. Sometimes they're going down and sometimes they're just not falling," Schulman said. "Eventually, I guess at the right time, it just went through."
Victorious on the Warriors' home court at Memorial Gym in Longmont, Schulman said it felt good to come through for teammate Mandy McCormick, who scored 18 of her team's 26 points.
"Mandy should get all the credit for this game," Schulman said. "She scores 20-plus points every game. She's the backbone of our team as a junior. She has the most character on our team and she's just amazing."
Until Schulman's shot, the Pioneers had trailed since the start of the second quarter. McCormick said overcoming an eight-point deficit in the fourth quarter made the rivalry win sweeter.
"We were down a little at half but I told the girls to not give up and they didn't," said McCormick, who scored 13 of 15 Pioneers points to start the game. "The girls came together because this is always a big deal. But that makes it even better when we win."
The comeback left the Warriors stunned. Junior Lizzie Ehr led the Warriors with 13 points, 10 to push the lead in the first half. Point guard Ashley Jauregui added seven points.
Led by sophomore Allison Cochran's 10 rebounds, Ehr said the Warriors boxed out well and ran their offense early. But they but got away from that.
"We played pretty well as a team," said Ehr, who had six steals. "We still need to iron out some kinks and learn about how to play our game."
The Warriors won last year's rivalry game 32-28 at Faith Baptist.
