LAFAYETTE -- The Alexander Dawson boys basketball team is looking to shake things up in the 2A Mile High League this season.

But that doesn't mean they're undervaluing the potential gains of solid play throughout the non-conference schedule. On Thursday night at home, the Mustangs got off to a good non-conference start with a 50-36 win over Bruce Randolph.

"We've looking to go as far was we can and we know that you have to be the league champions if you really want to go far," senior guard Robby Keown said. "Starting out with wins like this that are out of our league, getting our confidence up is crucial."

Turning up the hustle, Keown had nine points, seven rebounds and four steals to help lead the Mustangs to their first win. Mustangs senior Tom Walker led all scorers with 12 points and also grabbed 10 rebounds.

The Mustangs took control in the first half and led by as many as 18 points in the four quarter.

Keown said the Grizzlies were a tough team. Since they were new to the Mustangs schedule this season, he didn't really know what to expect. But more than anything, Keown said, the Mustangs' first game was about working on their new, up-tempo style.

"As a team, this year we're all about running," Keown said. "We're going fast, getting down the court and causing as much havoc as we can for the other team on defense. We want to put up as many points on the board as we can."

Keown said the style worked when the players ran it the way head coach Jeff Youngstrom asked them. But the Mustangs did commit 26 turnovers.

"We've got a lot to work on but we did pretty well," he said.

For the Mustangs, who finished 10-12 last season, Walker said Thursday's win was a good way to open.

"It's a great way to start the season," Walker said. "It shows that we've got a lot of talent this year and we should be able to do some good things."

The Mustangs play Rocky Mountain Lutheran, another non-conference opponent, at home next Friday.
