BOULDER -- It is somewhat understandable how Fairview's Isabelle Kennedy was able to build such a big lead in such short time at the annual Pat Patten cross country invitational.

After all, one could easily make the conclusion that Kennedy's pace was spurred by the fact that she was racing against a ghost.

Geared up for a showdown against Niwot star Elise Cranny that never materialized, Kennedy ran away from the field Friday afternoon, winning the title in the girls division by a full 61 seconds.

Kennedy's effort, however, was not quite enough to lift Fairview to the team title, as the Knights were outpaced by Monarch.

In a far more competitive boys race, Broomfield junior Ethan Gonzales pulled away from Denver East's Ashi Geberkidane down the stretch to win the crown by 11 seconds. Fairview won the boys team title after the Knights' top four runners finished consecutively from third-place through sixth.

"We originally thought Elise Cranny was going to be running, and my goal was to beat her," said Kennedy, whose showdown against Cranny was foiled after the Niwot standout opted to compete at a meet in California. "I guess I just raced her anyway, even though she wasn't in the race.

"I always go out a little slow and then try to make it up. I was lucky enough today to hold it. This is definitely a big meet for our team. We do a lot of our workouts on this course, so we know it pretty well. I'm just honored to have won on this course."

The Monarch girls turned in an impressive team effort, as all seven of the Coyotes' runners placed in the top 13. With the top five marks counted in the team scoring, the Coyotes ruled the team race behind Ashley Litoff (fourth), Claire Green (sixth), Kaitlyn Benner (seventh), Karina Mann (eighth), and Alyssa Reese (ninth).

"They've been running like that all season in a pretty tight pack," Monarch coach Kent Rieder said. "Our one through five finished with a 15-second difference. That's not much. We run in a pretty tight pack. They push each other in practice and it has made them all really, really strong."

Gonzales essentially was running step-for-step with Geberkidane until the final push, when the Eagles' junior left the Denver East senior in his dust.

"I was trying to fight Ashi off the whole way," said Gonzales, who recorded his first victory at a high school invitational. "Me and my coaches had talked this past week in training that once the decision comes, I need to make it and go. I saw him go and I was like, 'It's now or never.' I think he was done at that point trying to break me. But I ended up breaking him."

The Fairview boys enjoyed a similar performance as the Monarch girls, with six runners finishing in the top 20. The Knights were led by a third-place finish from Kyle Lund, but he was followed closely by Cory Munsch (fourth), Tim Brown (fifth), and Bridger Tomlin (sixth). Fairview finished 23 points ahead of Boulder.

"Isabelle, every race she learns to race better," Fairview coach Josh Glaab said. "You get so stoked to see someone like her progress the way she has. And the boys, they followed the game plan perfectly."
