LONGMONT -- It was just another day at the office for the prolific Roberts clan.

Thursday proved to be a historic day for the standout siblings from Lyons High School, junior Miriam Roberts and freshman Paul Roberts. Not only did each runner win their respective divisions at the annual RE-1J cross country meet at Sunset Golf Course, but they both rewrote meet, school and family history by breaking course records previously held by their older siblings.

The individual efforts by the Roberts pair helped lead the Lions to the team title in both the boys and girls competitions.

"I just beat my sister's course record, so that was exciting," said Miriam Roberts, who finished eighth at the Class 2A state meet last year. "Our team goal was to beat Niwot, and we did that as a team. I think my work over the summer is starting to pay off. My times are starting to drop a lot more than they did last year."

Miriam Roberts credited the push of Niwot's Christa Boettiger throughout the first half of the race for helping her to excel on a course that featured several demanding uphill climbs. Miriam Roberts claimed the girls title with a winning time of 20 minutes, 12.04 seconds, topping the former course record of 20:21 set by her sister Melissa and easily outdistancing Boettiger by 11.66 seconds.

Paul Roberts obliterated the rest of the field in the boys division to continue his breakout rookie campaign with the Lions.

By the time the race's runner-up, Niwot sophomore Jacob Fisk, crossed the finish line, Paul Roberts had already jogged halfway back down the final stretch to catch his breath and cheer on his teammates. Paul Roberts finished in 16:18.50, outpacing Fisk by almost a full 1:18. The tireless freshman also trimmed about 27 seconds off the previous course record held by his brother, former 3A state champion and current Adams State runner Andrew Roberts.

The Skyline tandem of Braden Richards and Sam Berg finished third and fourth, respectively.

"It's kind of been the goal -- I've wanted to come out and break my brother's records," Paul Roberts said. "I wanted to come out and run to the best of my ability and see if I could break it. We stay in contact. We have a pretty good relationship and that's really nice. He wants me to get these records, and I want to get them as much as he wants me to get them"

With fellow freshman Joel Such supporting Paul Roberts' effort by placing fifth, the Lyons boys team finished with a meet-best 26 points. Niwot placed second with 44 points followed by Erie with 48.

The girls race was much tighter, as the Lions managed to outscore Niwot by a lone point. It was an impressive showing for the Cougars given that their top runner, Elise Cranny, did not race in order to focus her energy on the Broomfield Invitational on Friday.

"Our girls ran really well," Niwot coach Sam Catterson said. "Christa Boettiger was just a little bit off Miriam, so that was a great race. I think we are where we need to be. We trained really hard last weekend and this week. We weren't too keyed up about this meet, but we wanted to come out and race it hard, and I think we're exactly where we need to be."
