FORT COLLINS -- Was it the sort of state final performance the Fairview girls swim team was expecting as recently as a few weeks ago?

Probably not. Yet the Knights nevertheless exited the Class 5A state finals on Saturday with an armload of new state medals and a fresh entry into the school record book.

Highlighted by a pair of top-six finishes by Lacey Smith, a third-place effort by senior Kourtney Fosse in the breaststroke, and solid performances in the relay races, Fairview finished in sixth place in an electric meet dominated by record-setting performances from Bonnie Brandon of Cherry Creek and Regis Jesuit's Olympic hopeful, Missy Franklin.

Boulder High, led by freshman Haley Rowley-Wiest and sophomore Amanda Richey, finished in 11th-place.

"We had some fine performances," Fairview coach Bob Smartt said. "The high point for us was probably our medley relay. They broke the all-time Fairview record. Two of the four girls on that relay are not year-round swimmers, so it was really neat for them to get the Fairview record.

"This was the swan song for Kourtney Fosse. She's been by far the greatest breaststroker in Fairview history. And she's part of the reason why our medley relay has been so good. She's made a tremendous contribution. It was nice to her place in the IM. We've been trying for four years to find her second event, and she scored points for us."

Fairview entered the meet without junior Abigail Houck, who likely would have finished in at least the top five in two events but instead opted to compete at USA Swimming's Missouri Grand Prix this weekend. But even while a bit shorthanded, the Knights still managed to compete in what proved to be an exceptionally fast meet.

Fairview's medley relay team of Julia Box, Fosse, Berkley Gamble, and Zoe Verhoeven actually set the school standard during Friday's preliminary heats, posting a time of 1 minute, 47.04 seconds before rebounding with a 1:47.35 on Saturday to finish in fifth-place.

Smith, a junior, placed fourth in the 100 freestyle and sixth in the 200 freestyle. The 200 featured a record-setting performance by Franklin, who topped the national high school record she set during Friday's preliminaries with a winning time of 1:43.15.

"I'm definitely happy with it, because I improved a lot from last year," Smith said. "Last year I didn't make it back to top eight in any of my individual events, so I was excited about that. In the 100 free, I moved up a few places from where I was sitting before, so that was exciting."Fosse and Box were the other individual stars for the Knights. Fosse finished 14th in the individual medley and shined in the breaststroke, finishing third in a thrilling race in which Heritage's Michelle Patton out-touched Lewis-Palmer's Laura Day by .01 of a second to claim the title.

Rowley-Wiest put a triumphant exclamation point on her stellar rookie season, finishing third in the backstroke and fourth in the individual medley. Richey excelled in the distance events for the Panthers, placing sixth in the 500 freestyle and seventh in the 200 freestyle.

"The 400 free relay, Julia Box really stepped it up and so did Sidney (Andrew), who hadn't been on the relay before" Smith said. "All the relays we did today were unbelievable. The whole team really stepped it up for state."

Fossil Ridge edged Cherry Creek by one point to claim its first team state championship. Brandon set Colorado records in the individual medley and the 500 freestyle.
