LONGMONT -- Asked to gauge just how important the Trojans' electric and undefeated start to the season is, Forrest Wetterstrom had to turn his head to suppress a smile.
He knows it is too early in the year to get really excited, but there is no denying that Longmont football is in a good place at the moment.
"It's a pretty good feeling right now. I mean 4-0 ... it's just a good feeling," he said. "If we didn't have any penalties and turnovers I think we could have scored a few more points on them."
Wetterstrom threw for 94 yards and rushed for another 79 with two touchdowns, Miles Bergner blasted field goals of 55 and 46 yards and the Trojans' defense forced five turnovers on the way to a 27-14 nonconference victory that was more lopsided than the final score.
Longmont (4-0 overall), ranked No. 3 in Class 4A, has been close to dominant all season, outscoring the opposition by an average score of 42-10.
The Trojans shutdown a Farmers' ground game that came in averaging 321 yards per game. Aside from a 53-yard touchdown run by Josh Brake, No. 8 Wheat Ridge only was able to muster an additional 30 yards total in the first half.
"Two weeks in a row we've gotten physically pushed around and I haven't been pleased with our effort. I expect more from this bunch," Farmers coach Reid Kahl said. "We have to be able to run the ball because we don't throw it very well. We're just off right now. I felt good about what we were going to do tonight and we just didn't do it."
Once again, Longmont set the tone from the very beginning.
DJ Fowler returned the opening kick 45 yards to midfield, and he punched it in from 3 yards out five plays later before adding the two-point conversion for a quick 8-0 lead.
Wheat Ridge responded early in the second quarter when Brake went the distance on the first play of the series. The point-after try failed, and it looked like a close game might be at hand.
If this were a court case, the Farmers would have pleaded nolo contendre -- no contest.
The big swing came in the final 70 seconds of the first half. First, Bergner blasted the school-record 55-yard field goal to increase the lead (the state record is 67 yards). Then Wheat Ridge booted the ball away on the ensuing kickoff, giving Longmont great field position on the Farmer's 5. Wetterstrom needed just one play to score.
Then Isaac Sprecher picked off a pass on the next drive with 5.3 seconds remaining, setting up Bergner's next boot, this one from 46 yards.
"I just went out there with the mentality that I had to kill the ball," he said of his longer kick.
Longmont, fully in control at this point, got another touchdown run from Wetterstrom on the first drive of the second half to make it a 27-6 score.
Wheat Ridge scored again late, but the 14 points posted were a far cry from last season.
"I'm really glad our defense stepped up and held them to 14," Wetterstrom said. "It's a lot better than when they scored 62 on us."
NOTES: Senior Kevin White was all over the place on defense, recovering a fumble, laying a few big hits and handing the ball to the referee after Longmont held on fourth down-and-short in the third quarter. ... Jordan Johnson grabbed a second interception for the Trojans, who held Wheat Ridge quarterback Tommy Bradley to 31 yards on 3-of-11 attempts.
