Jeremy Katz met the right coach at the right time.

The Fairview High senior, a middle infielder for the Knights' baseball team, signed this week to play next year at Rose State in Oklahoma City. His path to doing so wasn't as roundabout as you might think.

Carey Crain, a new coach in south Boulder's summer feeder system (with no relation to former Knights star Jesse Crain), has a younger brother playing at Rose State. When Katz and Crain were working out together this fall, he put in a call to the coach at Rose State, who brought Katz out for a visit that ended with a scholarship offer.

"It's a really great program, and we get to play a lot of really great teams," said Katz, who said he was recruited to play shortstop but who also plays second base for FHS.

Katz, who hit .286 for FHS last spring with four doubles, said he's hoping the trip through Oklahoma City ultimately ends with the chance to move on to Texas Christian University.
