Trace Gray landed a spring break experience on Tuesday that certainly wasn't on the Silver Creek High defensive lineman's itinerary: His first earthquake.

The 3.5-magnitude quake struck about 1:30 p.m.

Visiting his grandmother's house in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., Gray was hanging out with his aunt and step mom when a noise that kept getting louder and louder he first mistook for a helicoptor. Then the house rattled "a little bit, not much."

"And I looked over to Aunt and step mom and both said at the same time "earthquake" and went right on back to talking like nothing had happened," Gray wrote in an email.  "I guess today's earthquake was only a 3.5 force one and wasn't close to the worst one those two had experienced."

Not exactly the big one, but a spring break story for Gray that will no doubt be unique when he and his classmates reconvene on Monday.
