DENVER — Rudy Lopez was certain he had the pin secured in the first round. His coaches were adamant as well, yelling to the official that his opponent was flat.

The referee did not see it that way, instead giving Lopez three back points to close the first period with a 5-0 lead over Luke Pleasant of Central -- Grand Junction.

"I was really frustrated," Lopez said. "It's all in the ref's call, but I thought that was a pin for sure."

Lopez had to overcome the adversity and hang on over the next two periods to win a 6-5 decision that secured his spot in the semifinal round Friday night.

The adversity is something that will benefit Lopez as he gets set to face top-seeded Brendon Garcia of Pueblo County in his bracket.

"This is the match I've been waiting for all year," Lopez said. "I feel like I can compete with him."

Lopez is one of six wrestlers that will be in a semifinal match that features the top seed in their bracket. Dillon Roman of Monarch faces top-seeded Kenny Salias of Brighton at 106 in 5A and Ricky Childers of Skyline will take on Andy Garcia of Pueblo East, the top seed at 285 in 4A.

The other three matches have a local wrestler as the No. 1 seed in their bracket. Monarch's Vince Cornella won by majority decision in the quarterfinals and moves on in his quest to repeat as a state champion. Broomfield sees Darren Green, the top man at 138 in 4A, move on to the semifinals after a decision win. Longmont's Drake Engelking defeated Broomfield's Antonio Welch-Soto in their quarterfinal match by technical fall at 170, moving him to the semifinals as the top seed.

The rest of the field will see just as strong of competition in their semifinal matches as well.

Joey Jonier and Grady Funk both move on at 152 and 160 for Legacy while Boulder's Joey Airola continues his strong freshman campaign with a quarterfinal win by fall in 5A. Tyler Carpenter and Bryant Walker joined Green in the semifinals for Broomfield, who sends a region-high three teams to the round. Brayden Engelking will join his brother in the semifinals for Longmont after his quarterfinal win at 152 in 4A.

Lyons, Holy Family win three matches in first quarterfinal matches

Classes 2A and 3A kicked off the quarterfinals Friday morning with six wrestlers from Lyons and Holy Family competing. Three of them would pick up wins and advance to the semifinal round.

The first win came from Lyons' Oran Huff at 126. He scored an early takedown in the first round and held Monte Vista's Nicholas Garcia down the rest of the round. An escape to neutral position was followed by a takedown in the second round before he went on to win by pin in 3:24.

Joining him in the semifinals for Lyons was Karson Bean at 195. In a back-and-forth match with Jesse Amrein of Soroco, the two traded takedowns and reversals to remain tied after the first and second periods. Bean scored the only takedown in the third and held Amrein down, finishing the job with a pin at the 5:31 mark.

"It was exciting," Bean said. "(Amrein) is a good wrestler. I'm just excited to be in the semifinals."

The other three for Lyons in the quarterfinals were bounced to the consolation bracket. Konnor Mauck lost by fall in the second period at 182, Christian Keller came up short in a 12-11 decision loss at 120 and Logan Odell lost a 7-1 decision at 152.

Bean and Huff will look to get one more win Friday evening and secure their spot in the state championship match Saturday.

"It's one of the first times since the early 2000's we have gotten multiple guys in the semifinals," Bean said. "It's a great feeling."

Holy Family saw Hunter Branson move on to the semifinals in 3A at 170 pounds. Facing Zebuel Alexander of Gunnison, he scored two reversals in the second and third period that helped him win a 12-5 decision.

Heavyweight Jacob Berry was eliminated from the tournament in the first consolation round with a loss to Mullen's Angelo Damian.
