BROOMFIELD — It's been a whirlwind four years for Porter Milner.

It came full circle on Thursday night. The Broomfield senior has collected all sorts of local accolades as player of the year for the two-time defending Class 5A state champion Eagles.

At halftime on the girls game, Milner was recognized nationally by Sports Illustrated as their High School Athlete of the Month for March. Dignitaries from the magazine as well as the Colorado Rapids — defender Jermaine Jones — were on hand to honor the Broomfield captain. Milner is the first Colorado athlete to earn the honor.

"It's been a lot more than I expected, obviously, but I think the hard work paid off," said Milner, who will stay close to home and play soccer at Regis University in the fall. "I think we deserved everything that has come to us as a team and I'm glad I got these individual honors too, it's been awesome."

Several SI staffers came out to Colorado last month and spent several days with Milner, roaming the halls with him and even showing off his skills on the mountain as a skier.

"It was awesome, they did such a good job with that," Milner said. "It got me a little emotional, especially with my sister."

Ever the team player, Milner sang the praises of his teammates and coaching staff that were so instrumental in his success.

"All credit is due to those guys, to Jim and the coaching staff," he said.

Milner was given a framed copy of the magazine issue that he was profiled in as well a a nice new jacket, but those paled in comparison the best gift of the night.

Milner asked his girlfriend, Eva Bianchi-Martinez, to prom ... and she said "Yes."
