There were plenty of quality wins in the Silver Creek girls tennis team's 7-0 sweep of Mountain View yesterday but one stands out as particularly interesting.
With senior No. 1 singles player Elsa Erickson out of town for a tennis tournament, sophomore Kimmy Fung stepped into her role for the match. The thing is, not only is Fung just a sophomore, she is also a No. 1 doubles player on the junior varsity.
Fung wasn't expected to win. The Raptors easily could have won the dual even if she lost, so it was looking like Fung was stepping up to take one for the team, to do what she could.
Despite jumping up 10 whole ladder spots from junior varsity doubles to help fill out the Raptors lineup, Fung ended up winning a third-set tiebreaker that capped off the sweep with an improbable, but extra gratifying, varsity No. 1 singles victory.
"She definitely beat all the odds and we're so, so, so proud of her," Raptors teammate Anna Plank said.
