Each week, the BoCoPreps.com staff will highlight a handful of active local athletes from a variety of NCAA sports, catching up on where they are in their respective collegiate careers and any recent accomplishments they may have had.
• Kaitlyn Benner, Monarch Class of 2014: Benner is the true definition of a student-athlete for the Colorado Buffaloes cross country team, as the Pac-12 Conference recently named her as the sport's female scholar-athlete of the year prior to the conference championship race last week. Benner, who carries a 3.93 grade-point average as a chemical and biological engineering major, finished eighth individually and helped CU to the team championship in Oregon.
• Brittney Stark, Broomfield Class of 2014: Stark was just named to the 2017 Mountain West all-newcomer team after getting to play her first full season with the Wyoming Cowgirls. Originally a CU Buff out of high school, Stark transferred to Wyoming prior to her junior season but was injured all last year. As a redshirt junior in 2017, she led the Cowgirls in scoring with eight goals and added a pair of assists. She shares the field with her younger sister Michaela and a few other BHS alum.
• Justin Barkow, Niwot Class of 2016: Barkow, a BoCoPreps.com player of the year in 2014-15 for Niwot, recently added more achievements to his remarkable career at the South Dakota School of Mines. In addition to breaking the school record for goals in a season (7), Barkow was named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference academic player of the year just last week. He carries a 3.9 GPA as a mechanical engineering major.
• Collin Heimbach, Boulder Class of 2015: Heimbach has made the most of his nine catches this season as a sophomore wideout for Div. III Puget Sound. The former Panther has scored three touchdowns — two of those coming in Loggers victories as they are currently 3-4 on the season. Heibach totaled eight catches all of last season.
